The dictionary entry for the word "scandal" reports that it is derived from the Latin word "scandulum" which is apparently derived from the Greek word "skandalon" (4625). The 4th dictionary definition reads, "defamatory talk; malicious gossip". The synonym for the 4th definition is "slander, calumny".
