This page contains a map of the "Decapolis" or "10 City" area in which Gadara and the larger area, "the Gadarenes", was located. North is towards the top. Scale is unknown.

Gadara was one of the Decapolis, or "Ten Cities". The names of the 10 cities are shown in red on the map below.

Additional information:
The ten cities were originally inhabited primarily by Greek people who settled in the region after the time of Alexander the Great's conquest. After the Romans occupied the region (from about 65 B.C.), Gadara was made the capital of the Roman province of Peraea. Gadara was located on a mountain approximately 6 miles (10 kilometers) south-east of the northern end of the Sea of Galilee. The people of Gadara were known as Gadarenes, although the general area was also known as the "country of the Gerasenes" after the city of Gerasa which was approximately 45 miles (73 kilometers) farther south.

Paragraph 029 mentions that the herd of swine "ran violently down a steep place into the sea". As can be seen on the above map, Gadara (and therefore the larger area included in the term "the Gadarenes") is closer to the Sea of Galilee than to the Dead Sea. So the "sea" in question is more likely the Sea of Galilee than the Dead Sea. As can also be seen on the above map, Hippus (which is included in the area referenced by the term "the Gadarenes") is located closer to the Sea of Galilee than any other place in "the Gadarenes". So the particular part of "the Gadarenes" in question is more likely the coast of the Sea of Galilee west of Hippus than anywhere else in the area included in the term "the Gadarenes", or in the even larger area included in the term "the Gerasenes" (aka "the Gergesenes").

Definition and derivation of the word translated as "Gadarenes" are available here.
