Why was the title changed for the third edition?
The title was changed for the third edition because an analysis of the context of the word "gospel" (in the riddle) showed
that it was a specific reference to this "gospel", that is, to the
"gospel" that would eventually be un-obscured by following the instruction that
"Every word be established in the mouth of two or three witnesses." As soon as
it became known what this un-obscured "gospel" called itself, its name was
accordingly changed to This Good Riddle in deference to the ultimate author of it,
the most high God.
What were the major changes in the fourth and the fifth editions?
The fourth edition was defined by the enlargement of the scope of the effort to
un-obscure the words of the most high God to include the book of Revelation,
which had mistakenly been ignored in all editions before the fourth edition. The scope of
the fifth edition was first enlarged to include the Old Testament, and then
enlarged again to include the Book of Mormon. The realization that the Book of
Mormon is the third "measure of meal" (see paragraph 020-b)
was not immediate. The certainty about this was only forthcoming after many
portions of the originally discovered portion of the essential testimony,
This Good Riddle, were finally understood. Although the title This Good
Riddle was retained for the originally discovered portion in order to
distinguish it from the other subsequently discovered portions, it should be
mentioned and noted that the words of the most high God are not divided into
portions which are unrelated to each other. What constitutes each of the three
"measures of meal" is therefore somewhat arbitrary.
This mention of the history of this document having been made insofar as now possible, onward to the Acknowledgements.
